Zhengzhou Coalmine Methane Utilization Project
Zhengzhou Coal Industry (Group) Co., Ltd. (ZCG) is a state-owned industrial group located in the Henan Province, Central China. Its coal production is currently about 11 million tons of coal per year with an expected increase to about 14 million tons within the next 5 years. Methane gas is released under current mining activities and discharged in order to comply with Chinese mining safety regulations. The project will reduce the discharge and use this available gas for the production of both electricity and heat. This will be done in two ways. Firstly a set of 16 gas engines with a total capacity of 8 MW will use extracted coalmine methane to produce electricity and heat. Waste heat from the engines will be used to supply hot water to nearby mining facilities. Secondly, up to seven units of a newly developed methane oxydation technology (known as the Vocsidizer) will be installed at various mine sites to destroy ventilation air methane with low CH4 concentrations (below 1%). This technology will also produce thermal energy which will replace coal-fired heat.
